EuropeanTravelers > Einar Logi  > Interrail 2007 > Auschwitz, Poland
16. July, 2007. Travelled from Warsaw to Krakaw by train, left our luggage at the train station and took the next train to Auschwitz, one of Nazi's concentration camps in WWII. We staid in Auschwitz for six hours, including about 2 and half an hour of guided tour around the area. This was an unforgettable experience, seeing, for example, gas chambers; small dark torture chambers where people were kept standing over night; execution wall; 2,5 tons of human hair from dead or dying people; peoples belongings, like glasses, suitcases among other things. The combination of all this and the story telling from the guide made us feel discussed, frightened, vulnerable and I was not that far from crying. Here are some of the photos I took, but I couldn't take photos of everything I wanted as it was not allowed. Actually there were signs all over saying that photographing was forbidden, but I got a permission from our guide ;)

Einar Logi > There were not many photos that the outside world ever got to see from Auschwitz, but this is one of them (at leas similar) and was sent to the media to show the world outside that the people inside of the walls was having fun. One of many propagandas the Nazis used to lie to the world. Despite of that, many knew what they were doing but chose to close their eyes for it.

Einar Logi > I found this swimming pool in the still and quiet backyard, wonder what it was used for. There was a platform for a diving board on my right (not on the photo) so maybe it wasn't just used for bad things... who knows.

Einar Logi > Our guide. On the photo she looks like a ghost... maybe she is ....;)
Einar Logi > This is inside Birkenau or Auschwitz II as it was called. Here standing on the track which so many went after just to die. The tracks were connected with the train system in Poland and the location of Birkenau was actually chosen because it was so close to the train system. Only a few kilometres had to be added to be able to drive the prisoners right in here, and to be able to kill as many as fast as possible in the gas chambers. On the next photos barracks can be seen that were used to put the prisoners in who weren't supposed to die right away.
Einar Logi > Here you can see few of the still upstanding barracks in Birkenau, this side of Birkenau was for men only. The two first were toilets for the camps and the rest were sleeping barracks. Photos from inside are bellow. After the war, the Soviets needed timber and teared down most of the barracks. That is the reason for all the free-standing chimneys behind the barracks. Before the Soviets could finish, Auschwitz and Birkenau were turned into museums (two years after the war, if I remember the guides words right).
